Academics
Our Curriculum
MS 51 provides a rich, challenging academic program that will engage students who are growing through a variety of developmental and emotional stages.
Additional academic support is available after school for students in all grades if needed.

Math
All students learn honors math at MS 51 which is an accelerated math program aligned to NYS and Common Core Learning Standards. All students will take the algebra 1 course and take the HS regents at the end of grade 8.

Science
Our science program is also honors level, focusing on experimental skills and incorporating NYC science and sustainability institutions into the curriculum to motivate and connect to the classroom. Students also learn how to write a high school level lab report over three years. Eligible students enjoy the Living Environment Regents course in Grade 8.

English Language Arts
Literacy is the basis to all learning at MS 51. With the support of Teachers’ College, our ELA Team has aligned our curriculum with the Common Core Learning Standards, pushing students to their personal best in reading and writing and preparing them for the rigors of high school. Our ELA teachers collaborate with all subject areas as we strengthen the reading and writing skills in content area subjects.

Social Studies
Our multimedia approach to social studies allows students to explore articles, video, and primary documents to understand our past and connect to the present and future. Students create many projects throughout the year using their reading and writing skills and artistic creativity. Student writing and discussions focus on debate, argument essays, and research.

Physical Education
We have a well developed athletic program at MS 51 – during the school day and after school. Students learn many new skills and can play on our campus courts and fields outside when weather permits.

Second Language
Our students choose either Chinese, French or Spanish in 7th grade for their two years of study. Grade 8 students who pass the NYC Proficiency test in foreign language will be able to skip Grade 9 level in high school!
